ENTREPRENEURSHIP
You know those days when your motivation is at an all-time low? When your bed feels like the only thing that truly loves you, and you can’t be bothered to do anything beyond scrolling through TikTok for the hundredth time? Yeah, I’ve been there. But here’s the thing: nobody is going to come knocking on your door with a gold star and a high-five just because you showed up to your own life. It’s time to stop waiting for that magical moment of inspiration to hit you like a lightning bolt and start motivating the shit out of yourself. Here’s how:
1. Stop Waiting for Motivation to Appear Like a Fairy Godmother
Motivation is like that one friend who says they’re “on their way” and then shows up four hours later, right when you’re about to lose your will to live. It’s elusive, unpredictable, and always at the worst possible time. So here’s the harsh truth: motivation isn’t going to just show up out of nowhere, dressed in sparkles. You have to make it happen.
You know what works better than waiting? Action. Do one thing. Even if it’s the smallest, dumbest thing ever. For example, if you need to write a report but can’t find the energy to start, open the document and type one sentence. Just one. By the time you’ve written that, you’ll feel like an absolute genius, and you’ll be so deep in the groove that the whole thing will be done before you know it. Momentum is like a snowball — it only grows once you start rolling it.
2. Find Your “Why” (Or Make One Up)
If you’re trying to motivate yourself to do something, you need a reason. I’m not talking about some existential, world-saving purpose. I mean a reason that makes you want to throw your arms in the air and shout, “Hell yeah, let’s do this!” It’s got to be personal. It’s got to make you feel like the universe is watching and rooting for you.
Not sure what your “why” is? That’s okay, just make one up. For example, let’s say you’re dreading going to the gym. But what if, instead of thinking “I need to work out to be healthier” (which is lame and boring), you think, “I’m going to the gym because I want to look so good that people start giving me free things”? Suddenly, gym time feels like a personal mission to get free coffee, right? Whatever it takes to give you that extra ounce of motivation, grab it and run with it.
3. Create the Ultimate “Motivation Hack” Playlist
We all know that music can change our mood faster than you can say “Spotify playlist,” so why not take advantage of this power? Curate a playlist that makes you feel like a million bucks (or at least a really well-dressed $100 bill). Throw in some bangers, some motivational speeches, and even a few songs that remind you of your personal power.
For me, there’s something magical about putting on a song that makes me feel like I could conquer the world. I’m talking “Eye of the Tiger,” “Run the World (Girls),” or even some classic Britney Spears. Play this, crank the volume, and get ready to knock your to-do list out of the park. You will feel unstoppable.
4. Stop Being So Hard on Yourself
I’m here to tell you something that might hurt your ego, but it’s a game-changer: You’re not a failure just because you didn’t finish everything on your list today. So let go of the perfectionist nonsense. Real talk: no one has everything together. And if they do, they’re probably lying.
Instead of giving yourself crap for not being perfect, celebrate the small wins. You made progress. You tried. You showed up. That’s all that matters. Treat yourself like you would your best friend. If they were beating themselves up, you’d tell them to shut up and get over it, right? Do the same for yourself. Stop expecting perfection and give yourself credit for trying. This alone will motivate you to keep going because you’ll feel lighter and less burdened by self-judgment.
5. Make Your Environment Work for You
You’re not going to get anything done sitting in a cluttered, dark, or sad environment. It’s time to level up your surroundings. Start with your workspace. Is it inspiring? Does it make you feel like you’re about to create the next billion-dollar startup? If not, fix it.
Here’s what I do: clear away the mess (goodbye, coffee cups and random papers), add a plant or two, and light a scented candle (I mean, who doesn’t work better with the sweet aroma of lavender?). You’d be amazed at how much better your brain works when you’re in a space that feels fresh, organized, and welcoming.
If your work area doesn’t vibe with you, you can also switch things up. Try working in a coffee shop, by the beach, or even on your living room couch — whatever sparks that creative energy. Your environment should feel like a place where things get done, not where dreams go to die.
6. Embrace the Power of Deadlines (Even If They’re Fake)
Deadlines are the ultimate motivators. Even if the deadline is just in your head, make one up. Give yourself a time frame to get something done and see what happens. Trust me, the pressure of an imaginary deadline is often all you need to kick your brain into gear.
I’ve done this with everything from getting an article written to planning my next business move. For instance, I tell myself, “Okay, by 3 p.m. today, this project will be done, no exceptions.” Suddenly, I’m laser-focused. The clock starts ticking, and I can’t help but go into full hustle mode.
If you’re not working with a boss or client deadline, create your own. Make it a challenge. Make it a race. Deadlines are like caffeine for your productivity.
7. Give Yourself Permission to Fail (And Laugh About It)
Listen, perfection is overrated. Sometimes the best motivation comes from accepting the possibility that you might fail. And guess what? That’s okay. Failure is just another word for “learning experience.”
Don’t get all caught up in the fear of making mistakes. Embrace them. Laugh at them. The more you accept the fact that you might screw up along the way, the more you’ll find motivation to push through anyway.
For example, I’ve made some hilariously embarrassing mistakes along the way with my business and projects. But instead of curling into a ball and crying about it, I laugh and think, “Well, that was an adventure. Now, let’s go do it again, but better.” This mindset shift will not only motivate you but will also keep you from burning out.
You’re the Only One Who Can Motivate You
Motivation isn’t about waiting for inspiration to strike. It’s about getting off your ass and making the decision to show up, do the work, and have some fun along the way. When you take control of your motivation, you’ll realize that the power was within you the whole time. So, take a deep breath, put on your favorite playlist, and go get sh*t done. You’ve got this.
